Your choice,made simple

Every pet owner has the right to ask for a written prescription, so you can buy your pet’s medicines from the pharmacy of your choice, online or in person.

At Edhen Vets, we want that to be easy. Our prescription fee is clear and fair, and you can request one here in a couple of minutes.

Some medicines may be cheaper from an online pharmacy. Others are better dispensed by us, especially when your pet needs them today. Whichever you choose, our team will always talk you through your options honestly, with no pressure.

How it works

1.  Fill in the form

Tell us about your pet and the medicine you need. It takes about two minutes.

2.  Pay securely

One simple fee of £21, paid online by card. You'll get a full refund if we can't issue it.

3.  A vet reviews it

One of our vets checks your pet's records to make sure the medicine is still right for them.

4.  Ready within 48 hours

Once approved we'll send it straight to your chosen pharmacy.

Good to know

Your pet needs to be under our care

By law, a vet can only prescribe for an animal they have clinically assessed. We may ask you to see you first.

If we can't issue it, you won't pay

If our vet decides a prescription isn't appropriate right now, we'll call you to explain why and refund your fee in full.

Long-term medication

For ongoing issues, one prescription may cover 3-6 months of supply, depending on the condition and circumstance.

Buying online safely

Choose a UK-registered pharmacy. The Veterinary Medicines Directorate lists approved online retailers under its Accredited Internet Retailer Scheme.

Written Prescriptions Policy

At Edhen Vets, we are happy to provide written prescriptions for clients who wish to obtain their pet’s medication from another veterinary surgeon or pharmacy. The following policy outlines our procedures and charges for issuing prescriptions, in accordance with the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons (RCVS) and Veterinary Medicines Regulations.
1. Prescription Charge
  • A charge of £21.00 will be applied per product for which a written prescription is issued.
  • This charge covers the veterinary surgeon’s time in reviewing the clinical history, assessing the patient’s suitability for ongoing treatment, and preparing the necessary documentation.
2. Validity of Prescriptions
  • By law, a written prescription is valid for 6 months from the date of issue, unless a shorter period is specified by the prescribing veterinary surgeon.
  • Certain medications, particularly those used for specific clinical conditions, may require more frequent re-assessment for safety and efficacy.
3. Duration and Repeats
  • The quantity of medication prescribed (e.g., for 1, 3, or 6 months) will depend on the product, the clinical condition being treated, and the individual animal’s needs.
  • For many ongoing conditions, our duty of care requires a clinical re-examination at least every 3 months to ensure the treatment remains appropriate and effective.
  • Prescriptions may include repeats (allowing the pharmacy to dispense the medication more than once), where clinically appropriate.
  • To ensure clarity and prevent confusion for online pharmacies, each product will be issued on a separate prescription form.
4. Review and Clinical Responsibility
  • Before issuing any prescription, the prescribing veterinary surgeon must be satisfied that they have sufficient recent clinical knowledge of the patient.
  • The frequency of health checks or repeat examinations will be determined based on the individual case and medication type.
5. How to Request a Prescription
  • Clients may request a written prescription by contacting the practice.
  • Please allow at least 48 hours’ (2 working days) notice for the prescription to be prepared.
  • Payment of the applicable charge will be required prior to collection or issue.
