When would we suggest a consult with a veterinary cardiologist?
One of our general practice vets may suspect your pet has a heart condition, they may recommend a consultation with a veterinary cardiologist. Early diagnosis and treatment can significantly improve your pet’s quality of life and longevity. Common signs of heart conditions in pets include: Heart murmur, arrhythmia (irregular heartbeat), collapsing or fainting, breathing difficulties, coughing, abdominal fluid build up (ascites). Even if your pet seems healthy, these symptoms could point to an underlying heart condition and early intervention can make all the difference.
What does a cardiology consultation involve?
During your visit, the veterinary cardiologist will take time to thoroughly discuss your pet’s medical history and any concerns you may have. They will perform a comprehensive clinical examination and explore possible causes of your pet’s symptoms. You’ll be guided through all recommended diagnostic tests and treatment options. Our goal is to ensure you feel fully informed and supported throughout the process. We understand how stressful it can be when your pet is facing a potential heart condition. That’s why we work closely with you to deliver compassionate, expert care – always prioritising your pet’s comfort, wellbeing and quality of life.
What diagnostic tests may be needed?
Our primary diagnostic tool is echocardiography – an ultrasound scan of your pet’s heart. This allows us to see the heart beating in real time and assess both it’s structure and function. The procedure is quick, completely non-invasive and your pet will either remain awake or be lightly sedated for their comfort. During the scan, we take detailed measurements and evaluate the images to help form an accurate diagnosis. If your pet has an abnormal heart rhythm, we’ll assess the heart’s electrical activity using an electrocardiogram (ECG). This test helps determine whether treatment is needed. In some cases, we may recommend fitting a Holter monitor – a portable ECG device your pet wears at home to capture a more complete picture of their heart rhythm. Depending on your pet’s condition, we may also suggest blood tests, chest x-rays or blood pressure monitoring. If your primary care vet suspects your pet has a heart condition, they may recommend a consultation with a veterinary cardiologist.
When will I receive the results?
The results of the investigations will be discussed with your by the cardiologist on the same day. They will explain the diagnosis, ongoing treatment, prognosis and address any questions you may have. A written report will be emailed to you and also to the any other general practice vets involved in your pets care.
Will my pet be sedated?
This is decided on a case by case basis for the benefit of the patient. If you are concerned your animal may be particularly anxious, please speak to your vet before the appointment who can prescribe anti-anxiety and calming tablets which will make the procedure smoother.
What if my pet has a complex heart condition?
In particularly complex cases, the cardiologist may need to consult with other colleagues and specialists, or refer your pet to a different service provider. This ensures your pet receives the most appropriate and comprehensive care possible. Please note that onward referral (for example to a facility offering interventional cardiac surgery) will incur additional costs.
