As responsible pet owners, ensuring the health and wellbeing of our dogs is a top priority. One of the most common and beneficial procedures for dogs is spaying (for females) and neutering or castrating (for males). At Edhen Vets, we’re dedicated to helping you make informed decisions about your pet’s care. This page will answer common questions about spaying and neutering, why it’s important, and how it can benefit both your dog and the community.

What Does Spaying and Neutering Involve?

Spaying involves the surgical removal of a female dog’s ovaries and uterus, while castration refers to the removal of a male dog’s testicles. The ideal timing for these procedures can vary depending on your dog’s breed and overall health, so it’s best to contact our clinical team for tailored advice.

Spaying and castration are routine procedures, and our experienced team at Edhen Vets ensures that your dog is fully monitored throughout the process to keep them comfortable and safe. After the surgery, most dogs recover quickly and can return to their normal activities relativity soon but again, please follow the advice of your vet when discussing the post-op care

Why Should I Consider Spaying or Neutering My Dog?

There are many health and behavioural benefits to spaying and neutering, not just for your dog but for the community as well. Here are some of the key reasons why these procedures are highly recommended:

HEALTH BENEFITS

Females: Spaying your female dog reduces the risk of ovarian and uterine cancers, as well as the risk of a potentially life-threatening infection called pyometra. It can also prevent unwanted pregnancies.

Males: Neutering helps reduce the risk of prostate problems and testicular cancer. It also prevents your male dog from contributing to the overpopulation of unwanted puppies.

BEHAVIOURAL BENEFITS

Females: Spayed females will not go into heat, which can lead to less marking, yowling, and behavioural changes during their cycle.

Males: Neutering helps reduce undesirable behaviours such as roaming, territorial marking, and aggression. It can also lower the risk of your male dog being overly dominant or aggressive towards other dogs.

PREVENTING OVERPOPULATION

By spaying or neutering your dog, you’re helping to reduce the number of unwanted puppies. Sadly, many puppies end up in shelters, so this procedure helps curb pet overpopulation and ensures a healthier, happier community.

IMPROVED LIFESPAN

Research shows that spayed and neutered dogs tend to live longer and healthier lives than unneutered pets. This is largely due to a reduction in the risk of certain diseases and conditions that can affect unaltered dogs.

Common Questions and Concerns About Spaying and Neutering

It’s a common concern, but the truth is, most dogs don’t experience significant changes in personality. Spaying and neutering can help reduce certain behaviours (like aggression or excessive marking), but your dog’s loving nature and unique character will remain.

Like any surgery, spaying and neutering do involve some discomfort during the recovery period. However, the procedure itself is generally quick and performed under general anaesthesia to ensure your dog feels no pain. Afterward, we provide you with full instructions on how to care for your dog during recovery.

While the ideal age for spaying or neutering can depend on your dog’s breed and health, we typically recommend the procedure at around 6 months of age. However, your vet may suggest a different age based on your dog’s individual needs. At Edhen Vets, we’ll work with you to determine the best timing.

Spaying or neutering can sometimes cause a slight change in metabolism, which may lead to weight gain if your dog’s diet isn’t adjusted. However, this can be easily managed with proper exercise and a healthy, balanced diet.

Recovery times vary, but most dogs are back to their normal selves within a few days. You may need to limit their exercise, monitor the surgical site for any signs of infection, and keep them from licking the area. We’ll guide you through the process to ensure your dog recovers smoothly.

Most dogs will feel better within a few days but can take up to 14 days for a routine recovery. We’ll always provide you with detailed aftercare instructions to help ensure a smooth recovery process.

We recommend limiting walks and exercise for up to a week to help your dog heal properly. Gradually increase activity as your dog recovers. Again. please follow your vets advice, post-surgery.

You can easily book an appointment online or contact our team at Edhen Vets to schedule a consultation for your dog.
