Written Prescriptions Policy
At Edhen Vets, we are happy to provide written prescriptions for clients who wish to obtain their pet’s medication from another veterinary surgeon or pharmacy. The following policy outlines our procedures and charges for issuing prescriptions, in accordance with the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons (RCVS) and Veterinary Medicines Regulations.
1. Prescription Charge
- A charge of £19.50 will be applied per product for which a written prescription is issued.
- This charge covers the veterinary surgeon’s time in reviewing the clinical history, assessing the patient’s suitability for ongoing treatment, and preparing the necessary documentation.
2. Validity of Prescriptions
-
By law, a written prescription is valid for 6 months from the date of issue, unless a shorter period is specified by the prescribing veterinary surgeon.
-
Certain medications, particularly those used for specific clinical conditions, may require more frequent re-assessment for safety and efficacy.
3. Duration and Repeats
-
The quantity of medication prescribed (e.g., for 1, 3, or 6 months) will depend on the product, the clinical condition being treated, and the individual animal’s needs.
-
For many ongoing conditions, our duty of care requires a clinical re-examination at least every 3 months to ensure the treatment remains appropriate and effective.
-
Prescriptions may include repeats (allowing the pharmacy to dispense the medication more than once), where clinically appropriate.
-
To ensure clarity and prevent confusion for online pharmacies, each product will be issued on a separate prescription form.
4. Review and Clinical Responsibility
-
Before issuing any prescription, the prescribing veterinary surgeon must be satisfied that they have sufficient recent clinical knowledge of the patient.
-
The frequency of health checks or repeat examinations will be determined based on the individual case and medication type.
5. How to Request a Prescription
-
Clients may request a written prescription by contacting the practice.
-
Please allow at least 48 hours’ (2 working days) notice for the prescription to be prepared.
-
Payment of the applicable charge will be required prior to collection or issue.
