At Edhen, we want to make it as easy as possible for our clients to stay on top of their pets’ dental health. Some dogs and cats naturally keep their teeth cleaner by chewing toys, bones, or, in the case of cats, through hunting.

We recommend regular dental check-ups every six months so we can thoroughly examine your pet’s mouth for any signs of ulcers, gingivitis, or oral tumours. During these visits, we can also show you how to care for your pet’s teeth at home — from brushing techniques to choosing dental-friendly treats, toys, and bones.

However, even with the best home care, many pets still develop tartar and plaque over time. For this reason, we recommend a professional scale and polish once a year, much like our own visits to the dental hygienist.

Too often, we see pets needing 15–20 teeth removed, which is a sign that dental disease has been progressing silently for months or even years. These procedures are lengthy, complex, and can cost three to four times more than regular preventative care. By keeping up with routine cleaning and dental maintenance, you can help your pet avoid pain, discomfort, and costly treatments — ensuring a happier, healthier life.

Why Your Pet’s Dental Health Matters

Maintaining your pet’s dental health is essential to their overall well-being — just like it is for us. Dental problems can cause pain and discomfort and may even lead to serious health issues if left untreated. Here’s why regular dental care is so important:

Prevents Dental Disease
Brushing your pet’s teeth regularly and offering dental treats or chew toys can help reduce plaque and tartar buildup. This helps prevent common dental issues such as gingivitis and periodontal disease.

Protects Overall Health
Dental disease doesn’t just affect the mouth. Bacteria from infected gums can enter the bloodstream and impact vital organs like the heart, liver, and kidneys. Keeping your pet’s mouth healthy helps protect their whole body.

Reduces Pain and Discomfort
Tooth decay, infections, and gum disease can cause significant pain for your pet. Regular dental check-ups allow early detection and treatment, helping to prevent unnecessary suffering and improve their quality of life.

Prevents Tooth Loss
Advanced dental disease can lead to tooth loss, making it harder for your pet to eat and enjoy their food. Good dental hygiene helps preserve their teeth and prevent the need for extractions.

Promotes Longevity and Well-being
Pets with healthy mouths are happier, more energetic, and tend to live longer lives. By maintaining your pet’s dental health, you’re helping them enjoy a lifetime of comfort and vitality.
